Subjectsetitimer timer expires too early
Hello

I wrote a program which uses setitimer to implement a usleep() equivalent.

The setitimer man page states:

"
Timers will never expire before the requested time, instead
expiring some short, constant time afterwards, dependent on the system
timer resolution (currently 10ms).
"

I think that the current implementation of setitimer() (or something
related) is broken.

Or may be I use setitimer() in the wrong way!?

You will find the program below, and also some results under kernels
2.4.20 and 2.6.11.7 (both SuSE) on a x86 32bits PC.

I also tested it under MacOS X.3 and SunOS 5.8, and unter these OS all
is OK!

Each line represents one dectected problem with the format:
specified_delay real_delay

("problem" means real_delay < specified_delay )

As you can see, there is a bunch of premature timer expirations.

There seems also to give a kind of pattern:

For kernel 2.6, timers between
"n" ms - 300 us and "n" ms expire too early
For kernel 2.4, timers between
10*"n" ms - 600 us and 10*"n" ms expire too early

(with n integer)

Anyone have an idea?
Can you reproduce that?

Furthermore, the man page is not up-to-date about the the timer
resolution IMHA.
2.6 provides 1ms resolution for x86 (and what about other platforms?).

Do you know here can I find the maintainer?

Best regards

Olivier
