The fact that intel's i386 chips are getting faster and multi-processor,
and that PC hardware is getting so damn cheap is also a very big factor.

It appears that this decision has been made here in people's minds
already... we have a lab full of sparc stations (used by post-grads) that
need to be upgraded. They are going to be replaced by P233mmx/128Mb boxes
running linux at a fraction of the cost of the hardware/software upgrade to
retain the sparcs. (My own PC workstation has just about as much grunt as
our ageing sparc mailserver).
