In case there is a fix that you were trying in 2.1.94, I I must report that this problem persists in 2.1.94. I can also confirm that the problem occurs within about five minutes of booting even if I do not start X windows. I hope this data point is helpful.
I have attached the output of lspci below, in case other people experience the same problem and want to check for common hardware. This machine is a Pentium II-300 on an Intel motherboard with a 440LX chipset and some kind of built-in sound.
