Good news (so far): 2.1.91 + a few mm patches from this list and all seems to be going rather smoothly on my i486DX4120, 16MB doing PPP, IP Masq and SMB sharing for the company... swapping seems to be staying at a minimum and the net connection hasn't died. :-)
One things I have noticed though, since about 2.1.88 or so... I've been trying to get ppp2.3.3 off of cs.anu.edu.au and it has ALWAYS died. This is about 12 attempts now since 2.1.88. I've been running 2.2.0f without incident, but I know it's well past upgrade time for this puppy. :-)
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that 2.1.91 seems to work great (touch wood), it hasn't kak'd like 2.1.90p3 and 2.1.91p2 have, so you guys are on the right track! Mind you, I accidentally created this image with SMP=1 (why on earth do you have that in as a default anyway?), so I'm in the midst of creating a non-SMP version of the kernel to continue testing.
I'd love to help out with the development but I am afraid that my programming experience lies more in the realm of embedded systems and not high performance multiuser operating systems. :-)
