I pulled down the complete source archive for 2.0.20 and compared the copy of semaphore.S in my patched directory versus the file in the complete archive. The patched directory had both the new and the old version of the routine, in total, as its contents. The complete archive only had one version of the routine in the file. so I copied it from the complete archive into the patched directory and then rebuilt the kernel without any problems at all.
