I just unpacked a new Sony SDT-S9000 and attached it to my Linux box. I set the #4 dip switch to on (this seemed the best option according to the instructions), added the terminator and started up the machine.
The Mylex SCSI card and Redhat 5.1 recognized the tape drive and I was off to the races...
Next I popped in a tape (a 120m dds-2) and did a simple tar cvf /dev/st0 / (as root) so I would at least get the entire machine backed up until I could figure out a reliable system.
The sytem has a 4.5 gig scsi drive with not much on it yet except the standard install of RH 5.1.
I tried this twice and got the following error ... bru/tunebru bru/unmountcmd.sh kill tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
It then dumps back into the shell. This happens after it's already written a lot of files to the tape drive.
The next day I tried the same thing except I ran tar cvf /dev/st0 /etc /home /usr /var /www
This ran both time without a hitch. I have tried to backup the whole drive again yet. I know it may be a mute point since I don't need to backup everything since I was able to back up the important files and can restore the rest from the original CD, but I'd still like to know what might have happened.
Any help or insights would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim
