What about simply recording to a file?
% arecord -Diec958 -fdat foo.wav
Also try to build with CONFIG_SND_DEBUG_VERBOSE=y once to check how the PCM stream is assigned.

It shows you are using 1.0.17. Use the latest driver below, run alsa-info with --no-upload, and attach the content.
