Hello,
we are running a kernel version 2.0.36 (compiled with gcc 2.7.2.3) on a Slackware 3.5 for doing a gateway job (IP masquerading over ISDN for mail, name service, http) and file service for 3 Solaris boxes (nfs), 1 Linux RedHat 5.0 (nfs) and 7 Windows NT machines (samba).
We have experienced 3 "problems" (since the installation of the system in January, the last one was yesterday) on similar cases: a windows box copies a lot of files through the network from the Linux server. Apparently the network driver dies (cf the syslog messages) and things seem to go wrong in the module 'slhc' (?). Yesterday I have managed to restart the service by removing the interface (eth0) and the module (ne.o) then reloading the module and reconfiguring the interface: the machine seems to be working fine since these operations.
Any similar experiences? Could it be a hardware problem (we have not yet tried to replace the network card)?
Thanks for your help, Yves.
The system: Linux comms 2.0.36 #1 Wed Jan 13 16:11:15 GMT 1999 i586 unknown Modules: ip_masq_raudio ip_masq_ftp hisax isdn slhc ne 8390 The ISDN card (Eicon Diva) is on the PCI bus. The Ethernet card (NE2000 clone) is on the ISA bus. Hard disk, tape drive and cd-rom are on IDE. (The tape drive has been installed a week ago). The machine has 64M of memory and the load average is close to 0.0 almost all the time.
Syslog trace for the 3 "Aiee":
