Alan Cox was playing with the defxx driver 'round 2.2.1-AC5; don't know if he finished, or if his patches made it into the Linus kernels.
I'm keeping an eye on defxx myself 'cos my ISP wants to build a Linux/X86 NFS server and defxx is the only stable FDDI driver I know of. Keep us in the loop, would'ja?
