Your comment on help desks...... I've just devised a method of deflating them and had it successfully tested by my mate Pete yesterday in dealing with the help desk at VIRGIN ONET, they then put him on to their Director of Custmer support who then put him in touch with someone who knows what's behind the GUI. They try to give you the impression that you're speaking to the workshop of a large airline about a problem on your model aeroplane, though I believe you would get a very serious hearing of this one. The attitude we now deploy is to tell them that we are not asking for Linux support, that they would never come into consideration in a million years if we were seeking Linux support and that all we want is some basic information pertinent to any system. I suspect that's the last time we hear the "we don't support line-ux" crap from at least that quarter, so let's go for the jugular every time to save the ignominy of the cast off attitudes from these telephone operators.
