Duh.
Instead of reverting the ldt changes that are definitely needed for correct operation of some other things, how about this one-liner addition to arch/i386/kernel/ldt.c instead?
I missed one place where the LDT descriptor was initialized..
(This must also have broken wabi/wine completely, not just dosemu)
