I don't know about anyone else, but I find that the default value of 15 minutes for IP_MASQ_S_ESTABLISHED seems a little short. I may be slightly atypical, but I have been driven to insanity by many things. After increasing the timeout to two hours in my kernel, my many ssh sessions no longer go away long before I am finished with them, and I find myself with slightly less impetus to blow things up.
Perhaps two hours is extreme, but then so is fifteen minutes. Ideally, a /proc/sys/net/ipv4 option would do the trick, but I certainly don't have the skill or the time to implement such a beast and I don't understand the thinking behind setting it so low in the first place -- unless the MIB had something to do with it.
Anyhow, adjusting the hard-coded value seems in order, at least as far as I am concerned. Does anyone else feel this way?
Regards,
