I'm using linux-2.1.99 and pppd-2.3.4 perfectly well but I cannot use pppd-2.3.4 with kernels 2.1.115 and 2.1.117 (as I tested). The same pppd works well with linux-2.0.34 (pppd docs say it backs to old behaviour if it detects old kernels).
After dialing, kppp calls pppd and it dies with the following log in /var/adm/messages: Aug 23 06:07:33 wolverine kernel: registered device ppp0 Aug 23 06:07:34 wolverine pppd[147]: pppd 2.3.4 started by ds, uid 1000 Aug 23 06:07:34 wolverine pppd[147]: Using interface ppp0 Aug 23 06:07:34 wolverine pppd[147]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem Aug 23 06:07:37 wolverine pppd[147]: Remote message: Login Succeeded Aug 23 06:07:38 wolverine pppd[147]: Modem hangup Aug 23 06:07:38 wolverine pppd[147]: Connection terminated. Aug 23 06:07:39 wolverine pppd[147]: Exit.
syslog says: Aug 23 06:07:38 wolverine pppd[147]: ioctl(SIOCADDRT) device route: Network is down(100)
I did not change the pppd binary nor anyhing. Must I patch the kernel to get pppd-2.3.4 working with these kernels? Or must I get a newer pppd (where)?
Any help appreciated, since I want to use the latest kernels.
