While 2.1.109 couldn't sustain large parallel builds, with 2.1.100, we're now a step forward:
cd egcs-ss-19980721 CC="gcc -V2.7.2.3" configure make -j2
while writing some mail under X, locked my system (SMP, 192MB RAM, _no_ swap) hard. non sysrq-s, no sysrq-b, no numlock &c.
I can do this form the console, same result, and no oops.
I'd rather suggest going back to 2.1.85, which actually worked.. each version since .85 made the problem worse (for me, at least).
PS: I can do exactly the same under 2.1.85 with 64MB RAM.
