Subject'orrible 2.1.110

While 2.1.109 couldn't sustain large parallel builds, with
2.1.100, we're now a step forward:

cd egcs-ss-19980721
CC="gcc -V2.7.2.3" configure
make -j2

while writing some mail under X, locked my system (SMP, 192MB RAM, _no_
swap) hard. non sysrq-s, no sysrq-b, no numlock &c.

I can do this form the console, same result, and no oops.

I'd rather suggest going back to 2.1.85, which actually worked.. each
version since .85 made the problem worse (for me, at least).

PS: I can do exactly the same under 2.1.85 with 64MB RAM.
