OK, I hold my hand up in total ignorance of this FB stuff. I've compiled kernels with many different configs on 2 machines, one with Diamond Stealth 3D 3000 4Meg and a 2 Meg CL-5446 in the other, both report VESA VGA. Without VGA_CON, the last thing I see on bootup is "Uncompressing Linux", I can then login blind and fire X up, if I also include VGA_CON on its own or with VESAFB(I thought this was mutually exclusive with VESA FB), I get the normal VC stuff up and all my VC's are OK rather than the same as on VC1, except if I switch to VC5 to go into X. I am currently on the above kernel (no-SMP). I find the docs are a bit sparse, though I'll re-read in parallel with this posting, just in case I've missed some core point on the other occasions. One perhaps pertinent thing that just came to mind is that in the kernel compile, I've only used NORMAL and EXTENDED VGA so far. Excuse the "what do I type in" question, in any case I always wear asbestos suits for comfort, so flames would be useless. It's possible that when I get around to reading again later, I'll answer my own questions, non-the-less, any assistance gratefully received. Regards -- ...
