I had something similar happen: I was told to delete Linux and re-install Windows For Workgroups 3.11 to: "reduce our support and maintenance costs".
Seeing as I was the maintenance person for the section, and it was Linux that had helped reduced costs in the area, I guessed the real reason was Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
I left for greener pastures. I heard the department went to NT and the support costs increased 500%. Let them wallow in their own filth, I say.
