Please explain your reasoning. I don't understand the "if so" here!

It's maybe worth discussing. But if you have a way to keep this extra
1KB out of the kernel that won't take a year of programming and
introduce a mountain of unexpected side effects and undiscovered bugs,
I'm all ears. Until then I'll take the 1KB hit and thank you very much.
It's worth 100s of megabytes of memory to me in saved effort.
