Hello,
I've posted these questions to sparc-list and received one reply, however I would really like to hear from SPARC kernel developers. I'm in the midst of a large port from SunOS to Linux, and hitting some disturbing problems.
1. Does update have problems? After using it heavily for a couple days this week, my IPC got real pokey, so I pulled up top (slowly) and it displayed update as taking some 50% of the CPU. I should have tried to kill it off, but instead I just rebooted and now it's fine again for the moment. Have others seen this problem?
2. About a year ago when I first started working with SPARC/Linux, there was a problem with sun4c machines where they would gradually slow down (over a period of time) to a near halt. I think the problem was attributed to kernel problems involving the SCSI bus. Has that been fixed now? If not, what is the status of debugging the problem? (Would money help the situation?)
3. How many people here are using development kernels on SPARC? I use development kernels on my Intel box (and read linux-kernel regularly) because of the tremendous speedup I get with the dcache. Apart from the generic changes such as the dcache, are there significant SPARC-specific changes in the development kernels so that they're much better?
Thanks, Aron
