Well, there must be a REAL difference between 32 and 40 and the swap you have, because i tried running X Windows, (4) xemacs, (2) sdldoom, (5) xterm, (2) top, kvt, ghostview, kfm, kdvi, pine and compiling 2.1.91 and the response time never was below 3secs, and generally between 1-2 with swapped out processes.

It's not broken.. well, not totally :) You have to insert the modules by hand in the right order, otherwise it doesn't work.
