SubjectSound Standard.

Is there, or has there existed at any point in time, a standard for *nix
systems on how userland applications can interface to sound?

I've noticed that the way linux handles sound is completely different than
the way HPUX handles sound, which is completely different than the way
Solaris handles sound...

I'm aware this is what 4-front is trying to do, but I didn't find any info
about a standard on their homepage.

If the government doesn't trust the people, why doesn't it dissolve them
and elect a new people?
