What does this have to do with the kernel? AFAIK, gethostbyname() is a
C-library call, correct? I've not changed the runtime libs at all and, as
I reported, reverting back to pre-2 fixes the problem. Now, I DO use NIS
for name resolution, so is it possible something has hosed NIS operation?

Hmm. I'll check that in isolation and get back to the list.
