Yes. Fine. Command line and env overrides internal defs in make? I can never remember, no matter how many times I check.

Bet that's gnu and not posix. If it is posix, I'll pinch it.

Without the quotes, it would expand to
ALLMODES=a.o b.o c.o ...
which means: (1) set environment variable ALLMODES to a.o, (2) execute command b.o with args c.o ...

Yes .. the fuss about files in tmp is trvial to remove by not making any files in the first place, and that is the correct fix.
