This is a followup to my previous posting in which SMP kernels work but the same kernel built UP hangs while initializing IDE drivers.
The problem turned out to be APM BIOS idle calls; IDE initialization is the first point in the boot sequence when the CPU is idle long enough to call the APM BIOS idler, which hangs. (This is on a Chembook 3300T, built by Mitac for Chembook, Umax, and others.)
Building for SMP turns off BIOS idling, accidentally solving (or hiding) the problem.
