I installed kernel 2.0.33 on our http/smtp/pop3/telnet/ftp Internet server a couple of weeks ago. Everything was running okay until last week. Due to the Apache security advisories, I upgraded from 1.2.3 to 1.2.4 + the patch and now to 1.2.5.
Since I upgraded Apache, people have been having period trouble connecting to our server, especially using SMTP and FTP. I have reproduced this: I can sit at my system (which is connected via switched 10BaseT to the server) and try to open a bunch of SMTP connections (by just typing "telnet sh1 smtp" and then quit as fast as I can). Sometimes I get a connection refused.
People have been noticing this when they try to send mail using their Windows clients. They will get an error, but if they try again, it will go through.
I also have a monitoring program going (mon, a nice little program from http://consult.ml.org/~trockij/mon/), and I have it checking ping, DNS, FTP, SMTP, HTTP, and POP3 every 5 minutes, and it periodically fails on FTP and SMTP (but not ever on the rest unless there is a real problem).
I can't see what making a minor upgrade of Apache could do to cause this, but this all started the same day I did that. I know about the FIN_WAIT2 problem some OSs have with Apache, but it shouldn't be a problem with Linux, should it? Also, if it was, it would have been a problem with 1.2.3 as well. -- Chris Adams - cadams@ro.com System Administrator - Renaissance Internet Services I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.
