While testing patch-2.3 to see whether I could throw away my patch-2.1b (but I cannot - it is still the best patch around if `best' is measured by the ability to apply kernel patches seen so far), I got the following EXT2 panic:
<2>EXT2-fs error (device 08:02): ext2_readdir: bad entry in directory #43195: rec_len % 4 != 0 - offset=0, inode=1630303087, rec_len=26214, name_len=24435
There seems to be no reason to suspect the hardware. Filesystem activity: unpacking, patching, diffing, rming lots of kernel trees.
This was kernel 2.1.42. I went back to 2.0.29, repeated precisely the same actions - all went well.
I have no time now. May try to investigate a bit more later.
