Try using the latest NCR driver, and using the option:
ncr53c8xx=burst:0
On the lilo 'append =' line.
Here's my line from lilo.conf:
append = "ncr53c8xx=sync:10,tags:4,burst:0,verb:2"
Some motherboards (like mine) cannot properly handle PCI burst fetch, even though the BIOS says it can.
