You can avoid this by deleteting "-pipe" in arch/i386/Makefile. This cause segfault: gcc -S -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer \ -fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2 \ -malign-functions=2 -pipe -c m.c m.c can be "void f() { }" or something else. At this time, I don't know what is bad, but you can: 1. Use kernel compiled for 386 2. Comment that "-pipe" 3. Get another gcc, not from RH 4.1 but 4.0 (I'm not sure about this, but I also have no problems before installing 4.1)
