Yes, I'll second (third?) this. However, I had to play some tricks with
the geometry to work around what the controller does for sector sparing.
I'm running a Maxtor 760 on a WD controller. It's actually surprisingly
fast, considering the era it was built! Linear reads clock at ~1.6MB/s.
