I did some more instrumentation in the kernel (extending the printk message for a bit), and got this in the syslog after pinging a non-responding local host:
Socket destroy delayed (type=3 r=0 w=804 state=7)
The printk had been changed to
printk("Socket destroy delayed (type=%d r=%d w=%d state=%d)\n", sk->type, sk->rmem_alloc, sk->wmem_alloc, sk->state);
