I've seen that type of behavior since kernel 0.99.10 with the soon-to-be- replaced-by-either-Adaptec-or-BusLogic UltraStor controller I have. It's gotten better over the past 2 years or so, and replacing the Syquest drive I had with a Zip drive helped tremendously as well; the hardware in the Syquest drive wasn't up to snuff, I guess. It still happens on occasion, though, especially under load.
