SubjectRe: message log file unwritten and/or not readable

After deleting or renaming the logs (messages, syslog), you should do a
'kill -HUP' to the syslogd process. This is because the syslog daemon
actually keeps track of i-node of the log file.

> cron
> wtmp
> lastlog

None of these are used by the syslog facility.
