I haven't looked into this problem.
This is a 4.4bsd'ism...its correct as it is.
What I would encourage is: 1) wrapping the bsd fd passing in __STRICT_ANSI__ If you do gcc --ansi you can't use this. 2) turning off the warning for zero length arrays 3) Should -pedantic-errors also have -ansi?
