SubjectNew aic7xxx driver locking disk access

1. New aic7xxx driver locking disk access

2. When I compiled a new 2.4.4 kernel with the new aic7xxx driver, it
would sporatically start spitting out messages to the root
window/syslog as such:

Apr 28 04:17:40 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Attempting to queue an
ABORT message
Apr 28 04:17:40 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Cmd aborted from QINFIFO
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: aic7xxx_abort returns 8194

This would be repeated several times, then this:

pr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Attempting to queue an
ABORT message
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Device is active,
asserting ATN
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: Recovery code sleeping
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: Recovery code awake
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: Timer Expired
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: aic7xxx_abort returns 8195
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Attempting to queue a
TARGET RESET message
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Command not found
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Attempting to queue an
ABORT message
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: scsi0:0:6:0: Cmd aborted from QINFIFO
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: aic7xxx_abort returns 8194
Apr 28 04:18:30 zanzibar kernel: Recovery SCB completes

This is with the new TCQ default of 253, and it causes disk access to
stop for quite a few minutes while it spits this out. Anything in
memory seems to be fine (suck as messages in X Chat keep going), but
anything requiring disk access will just lock. Lowering the TCQ helps a
little, but it still happens, although when 9it happens, it doesn't take
quite as long. I even reduced it to 1, but it still happened, and it
had a habit of locking up the machine totally with nothing too helpful
in the syslog. Configuring it as 0 wouldn't give those messages, but
still the machine seemed to want to lock on me. I am now using the old
driver for now.

I also patched /usr/src/linux/include/linux/skbuff.h to get vmware
working by adding this after the "/* Internal*/" line:

static inline atomic_t *skb_datarefp(struct sk_buff *skb)
{
return (atomic_t *)(skb->end);
}

I'm not sure if this would affect this problem, though. After the
modules for vmware were loaded, I do get weird messages about sr0 in
the syslog, though.

Apr 29 00:50:50 zanzibar kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Apr 29 00:50:50 zanzibar kernel: Device not ready. Make sure there is a
disc in the drive.
Apr 29 00:50:50 zanzibar kernel: VFS: Disk change detected on device
sr(11,0)
Apr 29 00:51:06 zanzibar kernel: cdrom: open failed.
Apr 29 00:51:06 zanzibar kernel: VFS: Disk change detected on device
sr(11,1)

I did leave a disk in the drive at the time, but it was not mounted, or
being accessed. This seems to have happened at times when there was
also no disk in the drive.

aic7xxx is compiled into the kernel and not as a module, since this is an
all SCSI machine.

Note: this problem didn't happen in 2.4.3, and I was using the new
driver. Even then, it seemed to have a problem detecting my DVD-ROM on
0,0,0, until I moved it to 0,4,0, then it worked. It may have been
because the SCSI delay was set to 5 ms instead of 5000 (5 s).

4. Linux version 2.4.4 (root@zanzibar) (gcc version 2.95.4 20010319
(Debian prerelease)) #2 Mon Apr 30 00:32:34 EDT 2001

5. No Oops.. that I can see, the log messages included above.

6. The problem seems to be triggered when a program drives up disk usage
(like vi'ing a large syslog).

7. Environment is Debian unstable, kernel 2.4.4, running gdm and KDE 2.1.1
at the time.

Once again, this aic7xxx info is with the old driver now, since I've rebuilt
hoping for stability. If there's info that is needed from a kernel with
the new driver, let me know.

Please reply to me as well, since I'm not on the list.

Thanks.
