Hi, I just build and booted 2.3.99-pre2-2. Things did not work to well:
When I tried to dial into my ISP (just now I'm connected with 2.2.12-20, i.e. the default RedHat-6.1 kernel), the following happened:
Mar 16 23:29:01 thrawn pppd[763]: pppd 2.3.10 started by root, uid 0 Mar 16 23:29:01 thrawn ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp2 on /dev/ttyI0 at 115200 Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (BUSY) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (ERROR) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (NO CARRIER) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (NO DIALTONE) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (Invalid Login) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: abort on (Login incorrect) Mar 16 23:29:02 thrawn chat[772]: send (at&e*******s14=0^M) Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: expect (OK) Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: at&e*******s14=0^M^M Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: OK Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: -- got it Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: send (ATDT010880192658^M) Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: expect (CONNECT) Mar 16 23:29:03 thrawn chat[772]: ^M Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: ATDT010880192658^M^M Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: CONNECT Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: -- got it Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: send (^M) Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: timeout set to 100 seconds Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: expect (ascend) Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: 64000/X.75^M Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: ^M Mar 16 23:29:05 thrawn chat[772]: Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn last message repeated 23 times Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn chat[772]: UUNET Germany Dial Access Network tnt1.Berlin2^M Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn chat[772]: ^M Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn chat[772]: ascend Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn chat[772]: -- got it Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn chat[772]: send (ppp^M) Mar 16 23:29:06 thrawn pppd[763]: Serial connection established. As you can see, the dial-in was successful, but the system failed to do the PPP connection setup. When I tried to shut the interface down (/sbin/ifdown), the machine completely froze. I had to do a hard reset to reboot.
Another oddity: the /proc/devices contained entries with printk format specifiers in it, e.g. pts/%d (or something like this, this is from memory).
Regards Joerg
