Perhaps if we had the equivalent of the win32 function FindFirstChangeNotification(): http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/sdkdoc/winbase/filesio_9hgu.htm we'd get this for free.
Has anyone thought of/already patched directory change notification to ext2 or /proc?
