This is 2.2.12 with the broken autofs fix, cipe-1.3.0 and an nmap scan protection patch that was on here a while ago. I suspect CIPE again. System hung and nothing was logged. Despite "ppp0 not active" being displayed, the modem didn't lose the carrier. I couldn't try sysrq as I had no keyboard. Here's what was on the screen (subject to typos) and that passed through ksymoops.
