I certainly have this problem on my laptop (Compaq 6500). There
is a built in 10/100 ethernet + modem that appears as a third PCMCIA
slot, but the card is always installed (not removable without a screw
driver).

Shall we just say that things don't work very graciously at boot time
with the network....

I didn't have any problems installing off the CD drive, however. Might
have been challenging to do a network installation...
