I had a quick peek at my /etc/rc.d/halt having noticed that problem with
smb mounts, to notice that the line in my halt file was
umount -avt noproc || {some fail code}

changing it to
umount -avt noproc,nosmbfs || {some fail code}
seemed to cure it
