I had a long look at the kernel (./net) code to see if I could determine whether the packet filtering routines were free-standing and whether they could be called from the bridge code, but I'm a total kernel newbie and so far haven't managed to deduce the way the various code modules interact. I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a network guru either, but I'm happy to have a crack at this if there is someone out there prepared to hold my hand...
