I found the solution to a similar problem I have been having.
Disabling SCSI tagged queueing for my Micropolis 2217 drive (ncr53810
adapter card) makes it rock solid.

Might be a bug in the driver, but I guess it's more likely a bug in
the disk drive's firmware.
