I recompiled the SCSI system UP, and tried again:
[ben@gilgamesh:/tmp]% time rm -rf mozilla 12:56PM rm -rf mozilla 0.09s user 0.74s system 18% cpu 4.414 total
(SMP time next, for those of us who don't remember ;))

There's more going on than just an SMP vs. SCSI interaction here. SCSI is just being dog-slow, compared to IDE.
