I'm using 2.1.127 with SMP disabled, and I haven't seen the slowdowns.
I have an AMD K6 and 64MB RAM.

I have had a couple of hard lockups (not even SysRQ working), but I was
experimenting with Ultra-DMA, and that has always caused me these problems.
