You need to remove the device, not just turn it off.

# ifconfig eth0:0- 0

It's nasty, but the aliasing works by checking whenever you use an invalid
device name. xxx:0 will add the alias, and xxx:0- will delete it.

You can have numerous aliases, but in my experience you must number them
sequentially - if I try using an alias eth0:1 when eth0:0 is not present, it
won't work.
