It looks like linux-1.3.91 broke gdb (could have been 1.3.{88,89,90}, since I went from .87). If you put a random breakpoint (say at main), it won't stop when it encounters the breakpoint, but instead will signal the debugger after the process is finished, and then gdb gets an error saying you need a process to do that.
