Or "port%c", '0' + port_id);

Or maybe:
size_t buflen = sizeof (buf);
OPTIMIZER_HIDE_VAR(buflen);
snprintf(buf, buflen, fmt, args);

Maybe there should be snprintf_may_truncate() (etc) in one of the headers.
