To clarify, those cross-compilers are meant to be usable on any x86/arm64/ppc64le distro from the past 5 years, and should allow you to build kernels (but no user space) for all supported target architectures using all supported gcc versions.
I'm not asking you to waste time reproducing the problem (it's already solved now), just saying you probably could ;-)
