Thanks, I haven't tried this yet, but it looks promising!
For the record, right now I use a GNUmakefile (which takes precedence over the Makefile) in the build directory containing e.g.
MAKEARGS = ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi-
MAKEFLAGS += --no-print-directory
.PHONY: all $(MAKECMDGOALS)
all := $(filter-out all Makefile,$(MAKECMDGOALS))
all: $(MAKE) $(MAKEARGS) $(all) -f Makefile
