I was using the Ubuntu mainline Kernel config:

ben@n179 ~/p/linux.git> cat .config | grep TRANSPARENT_HUG
CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE=y
CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE=y
# CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE_ALWAYS is not set
CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE_MADVISE=y

Being an end user having only a very limited understanding of the
internals behind this issue, I really appreciate any support I receive
