Wouldn't somebody trying to distribute a rootkit say the same thing?

Phrased differently - if I have a Ubuntu or Debian system, and desperately need
some 3.3 feature, why should I trust these .deb files rather than building my
own kernel from a known-good .tar.gz from kernel.org?
