For what it's worth, I have noticed the exact same problems here when booting 2.6.39.1 on an asrock P67 chipset. The reboot on 2.6.39.1 and the bag page states. I also noticed some instability with 3.0 with it freezing up, but that's probably related to broken binary nvidia drivers.
